MUSICOLOGY PROJECT

Singers from Mizoram in Kiryat Arba.

In 2019, in collaboration with the musicology department of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Degel Menashe launched a project of collecting and recording traditional songs and vocal styles known to the older generation of B’nei Menashe in Israel. This unique music, songs sung to which played an important role in the emergence of the Judaism movement in northeast India, is disappearing today as younger generations cease to be familiar with it. Our project aims to preserve it for the future while encouraging a greater awareness of it in the present. It is an important part of the B’nei Menashe’s cultural heritage.

All of our recordings will be catalogued and kept in the musicology department’s archives, which will make them available to interested individuals on request. Samples of them will be posted on this Website as the project develops. A first selection, performed by B’nei Menashe living in the town of Kiryat Arba, who are also heard talking in their language Kuki-Thadou, can be listened to below.
